Our Physicians

Mark P. Gilligan, M.D. is a graduate of St. John's Prep, Dartmouth College, and Brown University Medical School. He completed his orthopedic residency in New York at SUNY Stony Brook followed by a fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. He has served as assistant team physician for the Boston Red Sox and Worcester Ice Cats. He is now the team physician for Danvers High School and Masconomet Regional High School as well as a medical director of the Northeast Rehabilitation Network. Board Certified in 1998, his special interests include arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery as well as hip and knee arthroplasty.

Douglas O. Halsted, M.D., founder of New England Orthopedic Specialists, is widely respected as one of the most prominent orthopedists and hand surgeons in the area. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he received his M.D. from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic and Maine Medical Center and an orthopedic surgery residency at the Combined Harvard Orthopedic Training Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Halsted then completed a hand surgery fellowship as a Christine Kleinhart fellow at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, and a trauma surgery fellowship in Switzerland sponsored by AO International. Board certified in orthopedic surgery with a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery, he is the first and one of the only hand surgeons in the area with a certificate of added qualification. Dr. Halsted has also been active developing new instrumentation and surgical techniques, including endoscopy, for use in hand surgery and is also a clinical instructor in orthopedics responsible for teaching residents and medical students. He is member of the active staff at North Shore Medical Center, and Beverly Hospital. 

Douglas Halsted, MD

David B. Lovejoy, M.D. joined New England Orthopedic Specialists in 1981. Dr. Lovejoy is a graduate of Yale University and received his M.D. from the University of Rochester. He completed a general surgery residency in Boston at the New England Medical Center and an orthopedic surgery residency at the Combined Harvard Orthopedic Training Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lovejoy's academic appointments include Harvard Medical School. A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, he has more than a decade of clinical instruction and lecture experience and has authored several publications in his specialties. Dr. Lovejoy's practice focuses on foot and ankle surgery as well as care of the spine. He is a member of the active staff at North Shore Medical Center, and Beverly Hospital.

David Lovejoy, MD

William J. Murzic, M.D. grew up on Cape Cod. He attended Columbia College where he received a degree in Economics. He earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine before completing his internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Murzic completed a one year fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, California, and specializes in total joint replacement. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and devotes the majority of his practice to hip and knee arthroplasty. Dr. Murzic has a wide range of research experience and has published several peer reviewed articles. He remains active in the clinical investigation of joint replacement surgery, and has made several national presentations. Dr. Murzic performs a high volume of joint replacement surgeries yearly, including complex revision procedures. He is member of the active staff at North Shore Medical Center, and Beverly Hospital. He and his wife Courteney live in South Hamilton.

Todd O'Brien, M.D. grew up in Andover, Masachusetts and attended The Governor's Academy in Byfield. Dr. O'Brien earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Rochester. After completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical training program at Tufts University, he began his medical training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. Following graduation as a member of the Medical School honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha Honors, he returned to Rochester and completed a five year orthopedic surgery residency program. After completing his residency, he was chosen to be a fellow in the Intercontinental Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, a combined reconstructive fellowship of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Balgrist Klinik in Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. O'Brien devotes the majority of his practice to reconstructive shoulder surgery including total shoulder replacement, reverse total shoulder replacement, and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.  Dr. O'Brien performs a high volume of joint replacement surgeries yearly, including complex revision procedures. He is member of the active staff at North Shore Medical Center, and Beverly Hospital. 

Todd O'Brien, MD

Jonathan R. "Jay" Perryman, M.D. specializes in the latest in management of complex sports problems, including arthroscopic management of difficult arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery issues. Prior to joining New England Orthopedic Specialists, he was a team physician for the New York Jets, New York Rangers and Hofstra University athletic teams. As a fellow in sports medicine at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, Jay participated in the care of career professional athletes on a daily basis and participated in training in arthroscopic and open treatment of sports-related injuries. After earning a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Dartmouth College, he received his M.D. from Georgetown University Medical School and was a resident in Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University. He was also research assistant for the Department of Orthopedics at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He is a member of the active staff at North Shore Medical Center, and Beverly Hospital.

Jamie S. Bartsch PA-C, ATC is a certified Physician Assistant as well as a certified Athletic Trainer. She attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA for both her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training as well as her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Prior to obtaining her Master of Science degree, she was employed at Mohawk Valley Orthopedics in Amsterdam, NY providing services for area high school and college athletic teams. Her education at Springfield College provided her with extensive clinical and surgical experience, and we welcome her as a new and enthusiastic addition to our practice.

Jamie S. Bartsch, PA-C, ATC

Richard A. Frear, PA-C did his undergraduate studies in Athletic Training and Kinesiology. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvainia. He worked in Emergency Medicine providing acute medical care on a mobile intensive care unit. Mr. Frear then attended and graduated from the Physician Assistant Program at Penn State University/Penn College in 2000. He currently serves in the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialty Corps Officer. Since his Commission is 2003, he has had significant training in combat medicine. He has specialized in Orthopedic Medicine for 5 years. His professional affiliations include: Phi Epsilon Kappa sports Medicine Honors Fraternity, Professional Ski Instructors of America Level Three Certification, and National Ski Patrol Senior.

Richard A. Frear, PA-C

Heather Parry, PA-C is a Certified Physician Assistant. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of Colorado, Ms. Parry worked as a physical therapy aide until entering the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences where she completed her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2001. Ms. Parry is Board Certified as physician assistant and is certified with a Special Recognition in Surgery. She joined New England Orthopedic Specialists right after graduation and has become proficient in orthopaedics while working in the office with patient care as well as assisting our doctors in all types of orthopedic surgery.  Heather is a life-long resident of the North Shore and grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

Heather Parry, PA-C

James E. Poulin, PA-C, ATC is a Certified Physician Assistant and a certified Athletic Trainer. Mr. Poulin graduated from Yale University School of Medicine, Physician Associate Program, and holds an undergraduate degree from Springfield College in Sports Medicine. He specializes in orthopedic medicine and provides surgical assistance with orthopedic procedures as well as pre- and post-operative patient care. Mr. Poulin has served as an athletic trainer for the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. He also served as an athletic trainer for several New England colleges and was a Clinical Rehabilitation Specialist for a sports medicine facility. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the National Athletic Trainers Association and is state licensed as a Physician Assistant and athletic trainer.
